We received a bunch of these new Canon T4i’s at the shop last week, and got the chance to play around with them a bit. Granted it looks just like the T3i, but Canon made some pretty important improvements. The T4i and T3i both have a 18 megapixel imaging sensor, but this new Rebel has been designed with an autofocus system that can use both contrast and phase detection. This allows for continuos autofocusing when using the Live View mode and during the recording of video. The camera’s AF system will also track subjects across the frame while shooting vids. The AF system is using 9 points, but like the 60D, all nine are now cross-type sensors adding to their accuracy.
Canon stuck the Digic5 processor in this Rebel and the ISO range has grown to 25,600 when expanded. There is a high ISO reducing multi-shot mode, too. The T4i gets a speed upgrade to 5 frames per second when shooting in continuous mode as well. Improvements in the video recording apart from full time continuous autofocus include the ability to record stereo sound with the integrated microphones.
Probably the most obvious addition is the 1.04m dot variable angle LCD screen has added touch sensitivity. That’s right folks, the touch screen has found its way onto a Canon DSLR. And to be quite honest, I think its pretty useful. It feels and reacts similar to the screen on my iPhone 4s. Check out this video overview we put together at the shop for a demo of it’s use!
