March Madness, and Here Come the Big Guns!

What a crazy and insanely fun time we had at the shop last week.  Not only are we in the middle of the March Madness frenzy with NCAA basketball action, but Canon and Nikon are shipping many of their new models and they’re bringing out THE BIG GUNS!  It all started with the arrival of Canon’s new PowerShot G1x and a trip to Greensboro North Carolina to watch some BBall.  Joe was kind enough to let me field test this unit as I embarked on the “Great American Family Roadtrip”; 15.5 hours in a car with my big bro and his two teenage boys to go cheer on our nephew in the Big Dance.  Unfortunately, it was raining as we drove through the Appalachians, and nighttime on the drive back, but I was able to get some good footage in NC at the tournament and some video at this super cool Revolutionary War Re-enactment.  I have to admit, I was pretty impressed by the G1X.  Check out my review:

When I got back to the shop I was stoked to see we received our first delivery of Canon’s new addition to the EOS lineup, the 5D Mark III!  The new 5D brings improvements to the autofocusing and metering systems with a slight increase in resolution.  Check out our official unboxing:

Right on the heal’s of the Mark III, we got in a bunch of the new PowerShots and Nikon Coolpixes, but I was distracted by a couple of more Big Guns the Nikon D4 and the much anticipated MP Killer the Nikon D800.  I didn’t get a chance to check out the D4 before it was sold, but I did get a chance to unbox the 36.3 MP D800.  What did I learn after wiping off the drool (luckily they’re weather sealed), I’m gonna need bigger memory cards and more hard drive space!  A 2GB card is like a roll of film if you’re shooting RAW with this bad boy, check out my unboxing and feature overview:

We’ll be trying to add more video reviews and field tests going forward.  Please let me know what your thoughts are of this kind of interactive blog format!  I’m also contemplating mirroring this blog on blogger since you don’t have to navigate away from the page to view youtube videos.

If you locate and “like” the picture on Porter’s Digital Cameras and Imaging’s Facebook page before the end of March, you could win it :)  Winner will be drawn at random April 1st (no joke) from all the people who click “like” on the photo of the Lowepro Fastpack 350!
