Canon Speedlite 600EX-RT Review and Radio Distance Test

Hey guys,

The other day we got a little ambitious here at the shop and decided to test the range on the new radio controlled TTL speedlite from Canon. We stuck a 600EX-RT on a T4i and had Derek go for a hike. Nearly a block away outside the Casey’s store he was still tripping the 600 I had in my hand outside the door of the shop. This system is SOOOO much better than relying on the line of sight issues we run into with the IR systems available. Check out this video for an overview and example pics from our experiment!

  1. Yes Charles, it works on any digital Rebel or EOS Series digital slr, also G1x, G12, SX40 Powershots.

  2. It seems you truly understand a lot regarding this particular topic and it demonstrates by means of this
specific blog, called “Porter’s Camera Blog”. Thanks -Rogelio

  3. WIth the Canon T4i or T5i it says there is a wireless control built it so can you use the 600ex-rt as a slave in wireless mode with the camera? Or is it only able to be a slave with the optical mode with the T4i &/ T5i? I guess I don’t understand what the wireless mode of the camera is.
    thanks in advance!

  4. Gordon,

The wireless transmission function of the T4i and T5i is more or less like IR. It requires line of sight as the pop up flash will relay information to the flash unit. It is not a radio signal like that of the transmitter unit built into the 600EX-RT(radio transmitter) unit. The 600EX-RT can receive the IR(ish) signal from the pop up flash unit for off camera slave with limited range, line of sight required. The beauty of the flash is if you have 2 of them, 1 on camera as Master, and 1 remote (slave) it will use the radio signal which no longer requires line of sight and has a tremendous working distance range.

  5. Thanks Paul. I received my 2nd 600EX-RT today. After playing around with it I got the two to sync together. I think Canon should say the firmware on the T4i/T5i camera is capable of controlling the 600EX-RT through the camera’s touch screen not that it has the wireless ability.
The way it looks from their advertising is you could use a 600EX-RT off camera, without the having the Canon ST-E3-RT or 600EX-RT in the hot shoe. (At least that’s how I thought it worked as a newbie)
I understand how to use it as an optical slave from the pop-flash but their wording is less than optimal as far as the radio control.

Thank you for responding so fast!
