From what I can tell this is Canon's best selling accessory lens. Why? Because this is also their least expensive one. From a construction point of view this isn't their best built. A plastic lens mount, relatively noisy motor, and almost no manual focusing ring allows them to keep to their price point. On the other hand you probably aren't going to bounce any lens off of the floor too often. At f/1.8 this lens is fast, focuses pretty rapidly, light in weight, easy to carry around and, by the way, takes some pretty sharp pictures. This lens is at it's sharpest from 2-3 stops down from wide open but. This 50mm is rather susceptible to chromatic aberration and flare so a lens hood is almost a required item when outdoors. I have a "full sensor" body so I find it most handy when taking "party" photos indoors and when outdoors at night without a flash.
