May 2008 Newsletter
Combining black & white and color in the same image is a creative technique that has been around for a while, and it is as effective today as it was years ago when photo oil colors were used to add a splash of color to black & white prints. Frank Zaremba, a member of PortersBoard, has authored a number of Photoshop lessons and this new one clearly shows in just a few steps how to combine color and B&W in the same image.  Visit PortersBoard at or by following the links at Porter’s Online Store.

This lesson explains how to have B&W and color on the same image without impacting the original color image. It will show you how to create a color or black and white window and allow you to freely move it around the main image. The intent of this lesson is to start with an image in color and add a B&W part to it. I am working on a PC with version 5 of Photoshop Elements; however this should work on either a PC or MAC and in older version as well.

The following will allow you to take an image...

and produce this.

Let’s start:
• Open an image.
• Make a selection of the part of the image that you want to leave in color.

• Now we are going to add an adjustment layer. Click on the half black and white circle on the layers palette.

• Select Hue/Saturation.
• Set the Saturation slider to -100, all the way to the left. Then click ok.

• At this point you will probably see that the part you want in color is now set to black and white. Don’t worry. Please take note of the Hue/Saturation layer on the layers palette before going on.
• To invert the selection press Control+i. (Command+i on a MAC.) The color and black and white parts will invert.

This next part will put a border around the selected part.

• Create a new layer.
• Go to Select>Reselect. You have now reselected your original selection.
• Go to Edit>Stroke (Outline) Selection. You can now select your border, size and color.

Now you have your Black and White and Color on the same image without impacting the original color image.

To change the look a little, select the top two layers.

• Go to Image>Transform>Free Transform and you can move, resize, or rotate the frame and the color selection.

Lastly – Have fun with this lesson and experiment with the settings.

Want it to be a monotone print?  Just select Colorize and adjust the Hue on the adjustment layer to get the color you want.

Remember - You don't take a photograph. You ask, quietly, to borrow it and adjust it with Layers in Photoshop.
