Porter’s Announces the Arrival of the Canon PowerShot 300HS Digital Camera

Porter’s Digital Cameras and Imaging announces the arrival of the new Canon PowerShot 300HS digital compact camera. The PowerShot 300HS improves on the previous Canon ELPH models by incorporating Canon’s HS System. The HS System offers a substantial improvement in low-light photography through a new imaging sensor coupled with Canon’s DIGIC 4 processor. Street price for the PowerShot 300HS will be $249.99

Canon’s focus on improvements to low-light photography has been spurred by family photographers who shoot a majority of their images indoors. By improving the sensitivity of the imaging sensor and enhancing the in-camera DIGIC 4 processor, Canon has addressed this major complaint of amateur photographers. Pictures taken with the Canon HS System in low-light situations will now have more natural color, less graininess, and generally look less like a flash was used to capture the image.

Canon is building their HS System into several more 2011 PowerShot digital compact cameras. Look for further announcements as the improved cameras become available.

Product Overview

Camera Flash Accessories – Rechargeable Batteries

I’ll be the first to admit that of all the possible camera flash accessories in the world, rechargeable batteries are the least sexy. However for all they lack in cool, rechargeable batteries should be the first flash accessory a photographer purchases.

There is no bigger battery hog in photography than a camera flash. The very design of a flash is to take the output of four AA batteries and step them up to about 10,000 volts. That sounds like a lot and it is, however it is the only way to get the intense white light of a camera flash and still keep the unit portable.

Decades ago camera flash required battery packs that we slung over our shoulders. The battery cluster in the packs were Ni-Cads that we recharged over and over again. Then in the 70’s smaller flashes that could run off of AA batteries became popular. The problem was that rechargeable battery technology didn’t improve hand in hand with flash technology. We had smaller flashes to use but we stuffed them with regular Alkaline AA batteries. Ni-Cad batteries in AA configuration just weren’t reliable enough.

It is unfortunate that rechargeable batteries got a bad rap from the old Ni-Cad formulation. A flash running on rechargeable batteries recycles faster and is ready to shoot before an alkaline battery powered flash is. On top of that, after we use up alkaline batteries we toss them in the landfill as garbage; wasteful and potentially harmful to the environment!

Thankfully battery technology has made some pretty big strides in recent years. Rechargeable batteries with NiMH (nickel-metal hydride) formulation have taken the place of the old Ni-Cad battery. Where Ni-Cads slowly lost their ability to hold a charge NiMH batteries keep running many thousands of cycles longer. Plus NiMH batteries hold a charge longer if the flash remains unused for a week or two.

My suggestion is to purchases rechargeable NiMH batteries and charger hand in hand with a camera flash. The low cost of a set of rechargeable batteries looks even better when we realize that after twenty recharge cycles we are money ahead compared to alkaline batteries. In short, rechargeable batteries may be the least sexy camera flash accessory but they may also be the very best investment.

Porter’s Announces the Arrival of the Nikon Coolpix P500 Digital Camera

Porter’s Digital Cameras and Imaging announces the arrival of the new Nikon Coolpix P500 digital compact camera. The Coolpix P500 improves on the previous P100 model by adding a 36X zoom lens and dual image processors for increased imaging speed and camera operation. Street price for the Coolpix P500 will be around $399.99

Nikon made headlines last month with the announcement that the Coolpix P500 model could shoot at up to 120 frames per second. It should be noted that this high speed is possible only at a reduced image resolution. However the reduced resolution shouldn’t affect image quality when the file is viewed on an HDTV or computer monitor.

Nikon anticipates the release of the Coolpix P300 digital compact camera will follow by April.
