Good lens for the price! | (Posted on 5/16/11)

I do lots of wildlife photography, and was 'suffering' with a basic 75-300 mm zoom, the one you can buy for $200. I don't yet use a blind, just try to get close enough to my subjects to get some pictures. Of course, this approach is spotty at best, so I decided to upgrade to this one, hoping for more magnification and better detail.
So far, I really like it. We've had almost nothing but rain since I got it, so I can tell you it works well in low-light conditions. Some shots are blurry, owing to motion of subjects on low shutter-speed, high-ISO settings and lack of image stabilization.
Don't know how this lens would compare to a Canon 500 or 800 with image stabilization. I'll have to win the lottery to find that out... But it does the job. Good detail, and you can get a shot from quite a distance away, even songbirds high up in a tree, where a 'lesser' lens would give you an unidentifiable, bird-shaped spot with no details to speak of.
The autofocus is a little slow. You try to focus, and it zooms way out, then back in to sharp focus, and the bird tends to fly away just as you're about to take the shot. I'll have to mess with it some more, but I find that manually fine-tuning the focus is sometimes the best way to go.
Much bigger than I expected. The description said 9.8 inches, but fully-extended with the hood and all the extras in place, it's more like 2 feet! Not sure how it's going to fit in my kayak, but great for upland expeditions!
Happy shooting!
